Everyone becomes a “Senior” at some point if they’re lucky!

Yesterday was the first monthly meeting of the Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs Advisory board of which I am a member. The meeting was held at the newest “senior” center in Tijeras. They have finished the first phase and are hoping to continue very soon. I am always amazed at how many awesome services that the DSA provides to the citizens of ALbuquerque and surrounding areas. Before I was appointed to this board, I knew very little about this department.

If we are healthy and blessed and maybe a little lucky, we will all be “seniors” one day and we should all know about this wonderful gift that we have in the Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs. From classes and outings and lectures and fitness and sports to dances and home food delivery just to name a few. Everyone over 50 can take advantage. I’m 50 and I don’t consider myself a “senior” but I sure find everything they do very interesting.

Sadly once again the department faces many budget cuts and may even lose it’s cabinet position, being merged with another department where it may get lost.
I would like you to find out more about the department of senior affairs and tell everyone you know how important it is that this awesome department gets what it needs to continue offering such amazing things to all of us. The website is http://www.cabq.gov/seniors/. Check it out and I know you will be amazed.

Merry Christmas!

Have a wonderful day and enjoy yourself.

Good Intentions and writing down our goals

Wow, Just finished getting rid of all the terrrible spam that this blog gets. Some of the stuff is pretty disgusting but it is really nice when I get an actual comment to a post. Thanks to you all who have actually responded to me throught the years.
Good intentions.
We all seem to start off the year with good intentions as far as our goals or resolutions for the year. Something gets in the way and we often don’t fulfill those good intentions. Too bad. It’s like a missed opportunity. We had the whole year to do something and now we have to start over.
I am a firm believer in writing down my goals for each year.
I used to write my goals every year and I was much better at achieving them. I can honestly say that I generally reach my goals when I write them down.
Lately, I have to admit that I don’t write them down as much. I used to write a daily to do list and of late I haven’t been doing that either. I feel that I am getting less done. When I don’t write things down, I lose focus. There is way to much going on in my life on a daily basis between the studio, family life, my boys activities and cleaning my house so when it is not written down, I just forget about it for awhile and then end up behind.
Therefore, I am telling all of you out there that my first goal for this year is to go back to writing down my goals, writing down what I want to achieve this year. I am going to write 3 month goals and long term goals and I am going to update them and check them off when I have reached them. Since I told you and wrote it down here first, you can hold me to it and check in with me next year. The other thing that is definitely going to go on my short term and long term goals is to not get caught up in daily life so much that I forget about my goals. To make time to reach them. To work on them, to pray about them and to have faith that they will be reached. I have good intentions.

Before I go, I want to wish everyone out there a Merry Christmas Season and if you don’t celebrate Christmas then I want to wish you all the love and joy that Christmas represents.

As Summer comes to a close Total Body Wellness is looking forward to the Fall!

Hi everyone. Wow, it has been way to long since I wrote. I keep saying that I am going to be more consistent but as always happens life gets in the way.
Now that the boys are going back to school, I will be spending more time at the studio and hopefully seeing some new faces as well as old friends.
I want to encourage you to come to the Tuesday 9:15 Pilates/Sculpt class. I can honestly say that their is no other class like this in Albuquerque. Come and check it out so we can keep it on the schedule.
Saturday Morning Boot Camp is comming back beginning Saturday, September 11 at 7:15am. This is an awesome cardio and conditioning class and it will last for 10-weeks. Cardio, Pilates, Yoga and Strength Training in one class. Pretty cool.
Also adding a new 5:30 Wednesday evening equipment class to the schedule. This class replaces the 4:30 Friday evening class that just never really filled up. We are hoping that this class will be just what you are looking for. It is limited to 4 people

I am continuing to build my Reflexology practice and have added Cranial Sacral Therapy to my bag of tricks. Also, our Wellness Therapy Program has been very successful and we hope that more people can take advantage of it. My goal is to be able to help you to fill better in any way I can.

Hope your Fall gets off to a great start. Once agani, I hope to write more soon.

Making choices

My catch phrase for my businesses has always been “choose to be healthy” and that is what I have named my blog. I came up with this phrase because we have to make a daily choice if we are going to live a healthy life or an unhealthy one.
Every day you wake up to an endless list of choices; hit the snooze button or get up, what to eat for breakfast, pack a lunch or go out for lunch, workout this morning or skip it, take are vitamis or not…. the list goes on and on.

Certainly not all but many choices we make on daily basis depend on if we have made the choice to live a healthy life or an unhealthy life. Take all the choices listed above.

If we choose to live a healthy life we will most likely get up right away so we have time to eat a healthy breakfast, have time to workout(if we workout in the morning), have time to pack a healthy lunch so we won’t be tempted to skip lunch or go out for fast food, remember to take our supplements and prepare ourselves for a healthy day.
If we haven’t made a healthy lifestyle choice we might hit the snooze button, grab a quick breakfast or skip it altogether, skip our workout for lack of time, figure we will grab something for lunch, forget to take our supplements and rush out of the house to face our day.

Now we all hit the snooze button every now and then. Of course that is not the point I am making. I am really just using this as an example as to how choosing to be healthy pretty much effects all we do. We will all make some unhealthy choices sometimes because we are human and sometimes we just want to. All we can to is try. We can aim to make healthy choices 90% of the time.

Take a moment today to look at your choices and see what small steps you can take to move you into a more healthy lifestyle. Most of you already make really healthy lifestyle choices but we can all improve in one area or another.

In the end it is a choice. It is your choice and nobody elses, so choose what is best for you!

You are what you drink

Did you know that 20 percent of Americans daily calorie intake comes from beverages. That is twice the World Health Organizations recommendation of 10 percent.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutriiton has put together the following guidelines for Healthy Beverages.

Level one (which has the highest value based on caloric and nutrient content, and related health beefits and risks.) is Water – up to nine servings for women and up to 13 for men. 0 calories

Level Two is unsweetened coffee and tea both iced and hot. Up to eight (8 oz)servings a day of tea and up to four servings a day of coffee. 0 calories

Level Three is nonfat or lofat milk and fortified soy beverages. Up to two (8 oz) servings per day. 100 calories per serving

Level Four is diet beverages with sugar substitute. Up to 4 servings. 0 calories.

Level Five is 100% fruit and vegetable juices, whole milk, sports drinks. up to one serving. 115 calories a serving

Level Six is calorie-rich beverages without nutrients. Up to one serving and less if trying to lose weight. 110 + calories.

So with this in mind you might want to cut out the grande mocha drink with extra whip. Stick to water, unsweetened tea and non-fat milk.

3 year anniversary in Los Ranchos

April 4th, 2008 marked three years in Los Ranchos. In July Total Body Wellness will be 5 years old. I started out going to peoples houses and then brought them to my house and then to a really small space. That space grew after a little more than a year and now as of last August, I believe we are finally home. I am as big as I want to be. And our space is beautiful. This year we have added Gyrotonic to the mix complete with a giant Gyrotonic Expansion System “The Cobra”.
Jordan has left to have a baby and will be gone for good because of time but we will miss her very much. Ivy will be having a baby in August and I imagine that she will be gone for a couple of months. Life goes on at Total Body Wellness. It has been tough making the move to a larger space but I am so grateful to all my consistent clients who keep coming back and for my husband for all his love and support and for my parents endless help and especially to God who is with me through it all and who always keeps challenging me to be a good person all the while bringing me such joy on a regular basis.
I am going to try blogging more on a regular basis. I always want to but think it is “too hard” to be technically savvy. All I had to do was look at some old emails from Jordan with directions on how to use it. Not so tough really.
Anyway, thanks for reading and feel free to write something yourself.

Please join us at our Open House!

We will be having an open house on May 2, 2007 to celebrate 2 years in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. It will take place from 6:30-8:30 pm. Come and have some food, drinks and view videos of Joseph Pilates himself.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

There is never a better time than the present to make changes in your lifestyle that will improve your overall fitness and health.

I encourage you to start a fitness program that you enjoy. If you are consistent, I guarantee that you will see and feel results. Remember though that exercise alone won’t do it. You must eat healthy, drink water and balance your life between work and play. Slow down and enjoy your life. Enjoy your family and enjoy who you are and what you are contributing. Have a happy and healthy New Year!
